[Era of Individual Establishment: Inner Nature]<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the early 1900s, I dedicated myself to creating artwork to express my individuality. I trusted my own senses and strived to produce works that were life-size reflections of myself. Through my experience with painting materials and printmaking, I developed my own method of scratching and hatching. This technique became an automatic drawing on canvas, and the scratching process seemed to uncover my “inner nature” while marking the passage of time. Hatching line drawings led to the creation of paintings that visualize and record the passage of time.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2012, I moved from Kanagawa Prefecture to Nagano Prefecture. Instead of relying solely on my own artistic abilities, I began to engage in co-creation with supporters and formed my own community. Without resorting to crowdfunding, I adopted an experimental approach to all my activities, without expecting definite answers.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As conflicts and struggles for individual freedom reach their final stages on a national and global scale, we stand at a crossroads where the old system has broken down, and a new era is emerging. People will seek to avoid the influence of social conditions and to gain freedom of time and space, in order to strengthen their individuality. They will move toward a desire for the ability to move between reality and virtuality. This aspiration was originally the mission and role of painting. I am exploring new avenues of artistic expression in this uncharted territory, by presenting solo exhibitions in virtual space and exploring how paintings can coexist with the virtual space of the new era, while retaining their materiality.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since 2017, my purpose as an artist has been to create contemporary art that is accessible to everyone. Prior to that, my focus was on improvisational paintings, seemiler to a drawings, and paintings with printmaking techniques. At that time I didn’t feel the need to make drawing and prints. I started exhibiting drawings around 2015, and making prints around 2019, not because I needed them for my paintings, but because I wanted to explore different mediums.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My dream is to create a society where people can freely choose and purchase works that have not yet been evaluated. To that end, my recent practice incorporates the atmosphere of contemporary art while using traditional art forms such as painting and printmaking. By adapting these methods to contemporary sensibilities, I aim to make the visual arts more accessible and relevant to a wider audience.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I see my expression as contemporary art in not only the work itself, but also in the activity of creating, presenting, and selling my pieces. Through these activities, I hope to create an environment where even those who are not familiar with contemporary art can appreciate and enjoy my work.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Sense of Inevitable Miniature<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“A fragment of blue sky seen through an icicle. Snowflakes sparkling on a window in the early morning. Branches enveloped in ice from melting snow in early spring. Fog freezes in an instant, sparkling like diamond dust dancing in the sky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the north-facing window in the hallway leading to my studio, I can see Mount Hareyama, where it’s cold enough to turn on the stove even in summer. Karuizawa in winter is truly cold. Nevertheless, I choose to spend the winter creating my work solely for the sake of my work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I observe the beauty of nature, I realize that it is born from microscopic detail and precision. Leaf veins, branches, seeds, bird and insect wings, snow, ice, and traces of raindrops on the ground. The microscopic details are simple geometric structures, yet intricately intertwined and organically constructed. Yet, to the outsider, they appear to require no explanation. And yet, they appear so effortlessly natural and inevitable. This is the kind of work I do, where I experience these wonders and miracles as part of my everyday life, and live with them. My work “Snow Waves” was the catalyst for me to embark on this lifestyle.” (Yuko Kawada)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This exhibition led me to connect with GAIA Contemporary, a gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“GAIA (Goddess of the Earth) Contemporary is born with the mission of providing a space for diverse people to empathize through art, and of saving the Earth from war and conflict by encouraging people to purchase art instead of spending it on military spending.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through this encounter with the gallery, I began creating artwork while sharing my experiences of living and creating in harmony with nature on social media. I am now working hard to communicate the unique Japanese perspective on nature, the world, and the way of life to the world through my work.

[My Journey in 2026: Balancing Public and Private Art]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the heartbreaking loss of my gallery owner in December 2025, my US gallery underwent a period of major transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For 2026, I\u2019ve decided to take the reins back and return to an independent e-commerce model. While I remain dedicated to public art for museum collections, this shift made me realize the vital importance of returning to my roots: creating “private art” that brings beauty directly into people’s homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also wanted to look beyond my own studio. On January 11, I started a new social initiative to collaborate with and support other creators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a big first step, I launched a new e-commerce site on April 1: earthkikaku.com. Built around the concept of “ART on EARTH,” the platform introduces and sells beautiful pieces by a wide range of incredible artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
