Officially, he was an employed physician at an ordinary hospital, but having overheard that he was an expert in Chinese medicine from Hong Kong, I started visiting his clinic<sup><\/sup>. An acquaintance had advised,&nbsp;<em>&#8220;He offers a treatment like secret arts, so why not try going?&#8221;<\/em>&nbsp;Indeed, it was an unusual treatment<sup><\/sup>. Speaking limited Japanese, I understood only about 10% of what he said, yet I received various wisdoms from the fragments of his words<sup><\/sup>. Worn on the ring finger of his left hand was a vivid, clear jade stone<sup><\/sup>. Set atop a thick gold ring, it shone brightly, as if emitting spiritual power<sup><\/sup>. The treatment was remarkably effective, and around the time I recovered and forgot about it, I heard through others that he had returned home due to personal circumstances<sup><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Incidentally, the gemstone language for jade is said to be &#8220;longevity, health, and virtue,&#8221; and last year it was designated as Japan&#8217;s national stone<sup><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Famous Japanese origins include the Hime River basin in Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture, and the Miyazaki-Sakai Coast (Jade Coast) in Toyama Prefecture; when I lived in Nagano City, I often saw travel advertisements for this Jade Coast<sup><\/sup>. As things tend to connect once noticed, one day while visiting Zenko-ji Temple, I idly watched an introductory video about Zenko-ji in a rest shelter<sup><\/sup>. The video introduced the Abbess of Zenko-ji (Takatsukasa Seigoku Dai-Sojo), and behind her figure stood an extraordinarily large jade ornament<sup><\/sup>. It appeared to be carved into a landscape representing a sacred mountain in China<sup><\/sup>. Being a Pure Land sect temple, it presumably depicted the Pure Land (Sukhavati)<sup><\/sup>. That stone, too, emitted a calm, transparent green light without a single flaw<sup><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While green jade is famous, jade actually exists in various colors: pink, light purple, translucent, white, blue, black, yellow, orange, and reddish-orange<sup><\/sup>. My interest in jade stems from my late father being an avid stone enthusiast, growing up surrounded by various stones and lore about them<sup><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My realization of a mission as a painter was triggered by a Zen koan:&nbsp;<em>&#8220;Fetch a single &#8216;stone&#8217; from the bottom of a thousand fathoms.&#8221;<\/em>&nbsp;Resolving to turn that koan into a painting was where everything truly began<sup><\/sup>. Stones exist everywhere, yet one must arrive at that single, unique stone<sup><\/sup>. A thousand fathoms deep refers not only to the ocean bed, but also to the bottomless spring of creative expression<sup><\/sup>. Thanks to this koan demanding &#8220;just one&#8221; from the depths, I am thankfully able to continue my creative practice to this day<sup><\/sup>. One year after its creation, I feel that this artwork embodies those feelings of gratitude and my various thoughts on jade<sup><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a side note, on a bright, clear spring day last year during a visit to Zenko-ji, I unexpectedly met the Abbess in person along the temple approach<sup><\/sup>. As she walked closer, people nearby folded their hands and knelt down, so I followed suit<sup><\/sup>. Praying and chanting sutras, she rubbed each person&#8217;s head with a rosary one by one<sup><\/sup>. I learned that this ritual is called&nbsp;<em>&#8220;Ojuzu-choudai&#8221;<\/em>&nbsp;(receiving the blessing of the rosary)<sup><\/sup>. Immediately after receiving this blessing, the opportunity to move to Karuizawa arose<sup><\/sup>. That rosary, too, was made of jade beads\u2014an unforgettable event<sup><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"News_Announcements\"><\/span>News &amp; Announcements<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Part 1<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aforementioned artwork&nbsp;<em>Fountain of Jade<\/em>, exhibited at the Yokosuka Museum of Art special exhibition in 2016, has been selected for the artist label series by Winzer von Erbach in Germany<sup><\/sup>. Importing it individually to Japan involves complex procedures, as well as shipping fees, tariffs, and brokerage commission fees (ordering by the dozen comes out to roughly 9,800 yen per bottle)<sup><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since individual importing is difficult for me, if I ever have the chance to visit the Rheingau region in Germany, I hope to look for the WINZER VON ERBACH wine bottle<sup><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">*Regarding this wine, the artist is not involved in any commercial profits made by WINZER VON ERBACH or the brokerage firm TAKAON TRADING LIMITED<sup><\/sup>. They took a liking to&nbsp;<em>Hakufuusen<\/em>&nbsp;(White Wind Line) and took it home on the spot<sup><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The special exhibition was the&nbsp;<em>Kumagai Morikazu Exhibition<\/em><sup><\/sup>. Filled with charming small works, the content made visitors feel,&nbsp;<em>&#8220;I&#8217;d love to take home a small piece like this, too.&#8221;<\/em>&nbsp;Mr. Kumagai&#8217;s works might have aided my cause\u2014I am filled with gratitude<sup><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, my new drawing creations sparked renewed interest in my past drawings<sup><\/sup>. A patron who recently purchased&nbsp;<em>Fuyu no Niwa<\/em>&nbsp;(Floating Garden, 2010)\u2014previously exhibited at the Quintet exhibition\u2014was sent the piece framed in a float-mount configuration prepared by myself<sup><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regarding float-mounting, I consulted YouTube videos, advice from a friend working in museum conservation, and inspected drawing frame configurations by contemporary artists at the nearby Sezon Museum of Modern Art for reference<sup><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How to Float Mount Artwork\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iAtVSRhNEN4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Float-mounting is a framing method that exposes the edges of the paper<sup><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Nagano, one can order high-quality frames, but because it requires delicate labor, framers often decline<sup><\/sup>. Since entering December, I have been taking time with larger drawings<sup><\/sup>. Works can be shared through various methods<sup><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though I held no gallery solo exhibitions this year, thanks to purchasing works and receiving support through newsletter information, Facebook\/email exchanges, and direct meetings, I was able to smoothly maintain my creative life at the Karuizawa studio<sup><\/sup>. Taking this opportunity, I express my deep gratitude for your immense encouragement and support<sup><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Reader_Feedback\"><\/span>Reader Feedback<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year, I was able to create a relatively large number of small works<sup><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I took the initiative in summer to introduce Thumb-hole size (15.8 \u00d7 22.7 cm) canvas works at 25,000 yen on Facebook, a first-time collector reached out and bought one with great delight<sup><\/sup>. Voices saying&nbsp;<em>&#8220;A 25,000 yen piece is attractive&#8221;<\/em>&nbsp;reached me from various quarters, so I try to produce them when possible, though the reality is that small works cannot be created easily or quickly<sup><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amidst this, I received the following letter<sup><\/sup>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;\u2014omitted\u2014 Looking at Facebook, I traced what kind of people were taking interest in Ms. Kawada&#8217;s works. A young woman posted about acquiring Ms. Kawada&#8217;s artwork\u2014which she had longed for\u2014at an accessible price, treasuring it dearly. That feeling brought back nostalgia for how I felt when I was young.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Overflowing with curiosity, when everything seen and heard felt fresh\u2014we can no longer return to those days. \u2014omitted\u2014 Yet those feelings remain precious. Seeing young people acquire artwork with a mixture of wonder and integrate it into their lives is wonderful. Original art, not photos or copies. Thinking so, continuing to create accessible pieces will surely expand the circle of people who sympathize with your work.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To N-san, thank you as always for your support<sup><\/sup>. I was deeply delighted to read your warm encouragement<sup><\/sup>. That &#8220;gratitude&#8221; boils down to being blessed with support, living today in tranquility, and being able to face creation<sup><\/sup>. It is about being grateful to the point where no anxiety over tomorrow can enter<sup><\/sup>. Therefore, today, I have no choice but to create what I can focus on from the bottom of my heart<sup><\/sup>. I must trust my natural instincts, which is why I cannot always respond immediately to everyone&#8217;s needs<sup><\/sup>. During a one-month hospitalization, she taught herself web development. For the Quintet exhibition at the Sompo Japan Museum of Art in 2013, she raised approximately 3.8 million yen in crowdfunding through her blog. This sustained her practice for four years, culminating in a solo exhibition at the Yokosuka Museum of Art in 2016. Following this success, she transitioned to full independence from gallery representation and moved her studio to Karuizawa in 2017. Today, she continues a pioneering, self-sustained practice\u2014releasing and selling new works directly through her website, online store, and monthly \u3010\u82f1\u8a9e\u7248\uff08Artist Biography\uff09\u3011 After working as an art teacher, museum curator, and university lecturer, Yuko Kawada launched her full-time career as a painter in 1995, working independently without secondary employment since 1998. Following the acquisition of her artwork by The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo in 2007, she relocated her studio to Nagano in 2012. During a one-month hospitalization, she taught herself web development. For the Quintet exhibition at the Sompo Japan Museum of Art in 2013, she raised approximately 3.8 million yen in crowdfunding through her blog. This sustained her practice for four years, culminating in a solo exhibition at the Yokosuka Museum of Art in 2016. Following this success, she transitioned to full independence from gallery representation and moved her studio to Karuizawa in 2017.
