The other day, a collector who recently purchased one of my artworks for the first time came to visit the studio with a friend. On their way back from a trip to Matsumoto, although our time together was brief, we enjoyed lighthearted conversation, and I received various impressions and questions, making it a truly meaningful moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That collector had previously shared a question-like perspective with me, which I still gently cherish in a corner of my heart. They seemed deeply torn between purchasing an artwork and the cost of an overseas trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I often wondered how my younger self would have resolved such a dilemma. In the end, I reached the conclusion that I had no fitting advice to offer, and the matter had almost faded from my mind\u2014until one day, an email arrived expressing their desire to purchase the work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nearly a year has passed since I relocated to Karuizawa. Over this past year, without holding solo exhibitions at commercial galleries, I have been able to continue my creative practice while independently selling my works. That such a life remains possible is entirely due to the collective support of each and every person who encourages me. Beyond my own modest thoughts, I cannot help but feel that an unseen, mysterious force is subtly at work somewhere. Supported by such human warmth, I am deeply grateful to be alive and creating, turning toward my work without faltering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although today&#8217;s rain turned to snow and Karuizawa remains quite cold, spring is just around the corner. With every piece, the objectives and awareness of issues held on the artist&#8217;s side shift, as do the methods and answers found to address them. There are moments when numerous paths lie visible, and other times when, despite seeing no route at all, a path opens naturally. For the viewer, there exists only one visible, tangible object; yet beneath it lies the result of a single path chosen from among countless possibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The various courses that reveal themselves mid-production may serve as stepping stones toward the next work. At other times, something kept warm and forgotten for a long while suddenly returns to forge a new way forward. For what was forgotten to awaken, a shift within myself becomes necessary\u2014requiring me to take a detour, if needed, to adopt a perspective entirely different from before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While many good ideas arise in the mind, executing them requires momentum. The source of that drive may be contact with nature, words of encouragement from others, or encountering fine works in museums. It encompasses not only an interest in an artist&#8217;s way of life and thought, but also reading through several technique books in detail to examine methods, researching materials thoroughly, and even checking YouTube videos for application techniques and effects of rare items only available overseas before deciding to order them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even among art supplies already stocked, entirely different possibilities can emerge depending on technique or application, leading me to carefully review my inventory to ensure no potential has been overlooked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the end, one&#8217;s inner world is directly expressed as the artwork itself. Thus, much of daily life is spent coming to know myself deeply\u2014expanding and deepening the painterly world I hold within, progressing day by day. Whether cooking, cleaning, or walking through town, everything connects to subtle hints for art creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The drawing titled <em>Kodama<\/em> is a piece produced from a new perspective, altering my methods. Reaching this point took time, and I could not produce many works this month, but bringing this piece to completion makes me look forward to the next stage of creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Autobiography_of_Painter_Yuko_Kawada%EF%BC%9A_Prep_School\"><\/span>Autobiography of Painter Yuko Kawada\uff1a Prep School<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The prep school in Ofuna I once attended no longer exists today, but at the time, it was the peak of the entrance exam industry, with the town overflowing with <em>ronin<\/em> students (cramming for retakes), full of lively energy. Soon after starting classes, I made friends. Two girls approached me; having been classmates in high school, they quickly began exchanging information\u2014a duo resembling Sally the Witch and her friend Yoshiko. They told me about a career guidance interview on the first day, so I immediately headed to the designated location. A long line had formed, and as the three of us chatted about our high school days, a young man spoke up. His face was familiar\u2014a classmate from my second year of junior high school, who had been the most popular idol-like figure among the girls. Smiling bashfully with a V-sign, he laughed, &#8220;What a surprise!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He told me, &#8220;My dad insisted I go to university at least. Since it&#8217;s my second year of retakes, I only use prep school for practice exams and spend most of my time working part-time or at the library&#8230; If you need info on our former classmates, just ask, I know everything.&#8221; Before I could even ask, he began sharing endlessly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He continued, &#8220;The student council vice president got a recommendation for Sophia University. The guitarist in our band passed the violin department at Kunitachi College of Music directly. The girl I was dating entered a junior college and became super outgoing\u2014she dumped me without a second thought. Guess <em>ronin<\/em> students are out of the picture. And that guy who liked you\u2014the one who played drums\u2014after you turned him down, he got serious and is studying intensely to study abroad at Berklee College of Music in America.&#8221; As I listened, anxiety began to build within me. At the same time, the phrase &#8220;what comes after university is what matters&#8221; surfaced in my mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet the speaker remained as easygoing as ever, smiling with pleasant good nature. &#8220;Why did you reject him? He&#8217;s got a bright future! Or would you rather date me?&#8221; As the talk drifted toward mundane gossip, I remembered why this person had always been a bit unfortunate, and cut in sharply:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Isn&#8217;t right now the most crucial period for both of us? You should take my rejection as a wake-up call and get serious! This is no time to be dating!&#8221; I actually had no memory of saying this, but 20 years later at a class reunion, he brought it up and told me about it. It seems it was quite a harsh blow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the career guidance session, I was advised to take the specialized art university course offered at the main campus. However, when I mentioned the burden of commuting daily from my parents&#8217; house, they offered to introduce me to someone who had enrolled in the Art Studies department at an art university so I could receive advice on specialized preparation. Thinking it a wonderful opportunity, I asked to meet them in person a few days later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The person introduced to me was a student from Tama Art University, appearing with an aura that still dragged along his <em>ronin<\/em> days. Tying his long hair behind his head and scratching his scalp, he asked abruptly, &#8220;You want to enter the Art Studies department? Why?&#8221; The question &#8220;Why?&#8221; felt less like a query and more like a rejection. As I remained silent, he continued:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I regret it. I lacked the ability to enter the studio art program, so I had no choice but to pick Art Studies. But in the end, I decided to pursue the path of an artist anyway, and now I just spend all my time creating. I&#8217;m holding a solo exhibition nearby soon, so you should come see it.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Printed on the postcard was an image of his work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;What do you think of this piece? Paintings rendered on square canvases are outdated\u2014this is a work formed into a custom, free shape I created myself.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The work appeared to be constructed by joining together several square canvases like a puzzle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(<em>&#8220;A free shape?
