The weeping cherry tree beside the sunroom has also begun to bloom, its charming pink buds shining vividly against the clear blue sky. Mount Asama in the distance still carries soft snow, and the cool upper-air currents occasionally drift down pleasantly on the wind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This month, another traveler touring museums in the Tohoku region stopped by my studio. I sent an email to their destination to express my gratitude:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;To continue creating over a long period, various strengths are tested. This was thanks to the very warm reception and numerous impressions I received for <em>Kodama (Tree Spirit)<\/em>, which was introduced in last month&#8217;s newsletter. I decided to create several pieces as a series. (They are introduced at the end of this letter, so please scroll down to enjoy them.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, receiving high praise can sometimes make subsequent production more challenging. Truthfully, when considering what is most important for an artist among works whose quality is immediately understood, those that sink in gradually, and those re-evaluated years later\u2014I have always believed that an artist should create works that are not immediately praised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Works that gain instant approval quickly grow old, reducing them to mere trends. Though it is a difficult path, there are aspects where one must have the courage to fight by creating works that may go unappreciated. Even so, the world is vast, and even among works that challenge such unpopularity, a rebel of the era will inevitably come along to value them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is precisely what makes art complex and yet so deeply fascinating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is the concept of a &#8220;scale&#8221;\u2014a yardstick for discerning goodness and value that everyone possesses intuitively in their own way. This yardstick fluctuates and shifts daily under the influence of various information, but depending on the individual, multiple yardsticks may also develop over time. One might alternate between private personal sensibilities and public opinion, or in some cases, hold a yardstick that acts like a prophet, tapping into future sensibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sharpening such intuition perhaps comes from deeply confronting, suffering through, and seriously pondering the problems people in modern society carry and how to resolve them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The moment of clarity arrives much like a new world peeking out from beyond a drizzle\u2014frightening, beautiful, bright with hope, yet wrapped in a floating, uncertain sense of bewilderment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps painting offers its subtle smile to those who have accumulated such delicate experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This work had been nurtured in my mind since before I moved to Karuizawa. Recently, when I took it out to look at it again, it felt as though the sensation of painting amidst Karuizawa&#8217;s drizzle had been foretold. After adding a few brushstrokes and overlaying my anticipation for the upcoming season of fresh greenery, I titled it <em>Green Rain<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Autobiography_of_Painter_Yuko_Kawada%EF%BC%9AWhat_is_Art_Studies_at_an_Art_University\"><\/span>Autobiography of Painter Yuko Kawada\uff1aWhat is Art Studies at an Art University?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Tama Art University student I was introduced to opened the art history reference books by Gombrich and Kenneth Clark that I had brought along, abruptly marking key passages in pencil and writing notes right on the pages. At the time, I was quite soft-spoken and was thoroughly bewildered, unable to stop him\u2014a memory that remains vividly with me today. Yet on the other hand, I gained vital information regarding my future path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When people think of art universities, they often picture institutions for learning practical skills in painting, sculpture, or design. However, there are also departments and majors in &#8220;Art Studies.&#8221; These allow students to learn theoretical subjects like art history, color theory, and descriptive geometry alongside practical work, with the added appeal of earning teaching and museum curator certifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Universities where art history could be studied also existed within liberal arts faculties, and I later learned that a humanities background was often more advantageous for becoming a curator at a museum. Before taking the exams, however, such information was unavailable from any source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the time, museums were being built one after another across the nation, and department store art galleries were also thriving, making &#8220;curator&#8221; one of the new star professions. Given that social context, my parents began advising me to pursue a career as a curator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My true desire was simply &#8220;to paint and study art professionally,&#8221; without any thought regarding post-graduation employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Tama Art University student was enrolled in the Art Studies department, yet he stated he had no interest in becoming either a teacher or a curator. His words\u2014&#8221;We&#8217;re entering an era that gives opportunities to young artists&#8217; works, so you shouldn&#8217;t fall behind. Which art school or major you belong to doesn&#8217;t matter&#8221;\u2014entered my mind naturally. Triggered by this, I began to think that I could simply enter an Art Studies department at some art school to reassure my parents, and then earnestly dedicate myself to practical studio classes on my own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To be sure, gaining admission to a highly competitive art university would have brought a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction at the time. However, having my parents become overly cautious, worrying &#8220;Is she trying to become a painter?&#8221;, or placing excessive expectations on me to &#8220;become a curator at a major museum&#8221; was also a concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking back now, I can analyze that somewhere in my subconscious lay a conviction: being a &#8220;disappointing daughter&#8221; in my parents&#8217; eyes allowed me to be freer and truer to myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the time, however, it was merely an unconscious judgment that it might be better not to advance to Tokyo University of the Arts or pursue an overly advantageous path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally liberated from high school life focused entirely on university entrance exams, I resolved to make my year as a <em>ronin<\/em> student free and easygoing. Using an art school&#8217;s Art Studies department as an explicit reason, I devoted myself wholeheartedly to drawing for the practical exams, while spending my nights reading through art history books recommended by the Tama Art student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I never saw that Tama Art student again and regrettably missed the solo exhibition he invited me to, but for me, it became an event that cleared my doubts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Afterward, although I met people aiming for Tokyo University of the Arts at prep school summer courses and attended lectures by assistants from that university, for some reason I did not receive a favorable impression. Deposit of Artwork to Museum<\/strong><br>\nMr. Kazuaki Nemoto, a collector of my works, wished to share my art with a wider audience and has temporarily deposited <em>Setsuro (Snow Wave)<\/em> (2008\u20132013, 162 \u00d7 194 cm) to the Yokosuka Museum of Art. This has provided tremendous support for me as well. I will share further updates once it goes on display.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2. Family Relocation &amp; Artwork Release<\/strong><br>\nStarting this month, my mother, who lived in Kamakura, has registered her residence at my address and will move to a facility nearby in May. This relocation comes after receiving notice from a group home with care services that we had reserved two years ago. Having lived a life centered entirely on art creation, I intend to offer her modest support nearby.<br>\nIn connection with this move, my mother will be parting with <em>Aspiration for the Cloud<\/em> (2011, 60.6 \u00d7 60.6 cm), which she purchased at a gallery in 2012 for around 150,000 yen and enjoyed displaying in her entryway in Kamakura.
