画家川田祐子 ニュースレターについて

2017年にアトリエを軽井沢に移した当時、ブログの読者様たちやそれまで画廊で作品を購入してくださっていたお客様に向けて、メルマガ配信を始めました。

当時、12年間お世話になったギャラリー・オーナーが病気で倒れたり、画廊の閉廊、そして独立という最中に、都心から離れて作家活動を持続するために、メールマガジンは、言わば補助輪のようなものでした。

月に1度定期的に休むことなく、2024年まで続けました。毎月自分のこれまでの歩みを振り返り、自伝を書くとともに、新作を数点紹介しました。購入してくださる方がより購入しやすいように、作品販売サイトを自力で立ち上げて、コツコツと作品をアップし、メルマガのリンクから販売サイトに飛ぶようにしたり、クレジット払いや分割払い、請求書払いなどさまざまな仕組みを備えさせていきました。

制作をしながら、WEBサイト構築は手間や時間を取られましたが、アルバイトをしながら制作を維持するのと、WEBサイトをコツコツ勉強しながら、作品を売って制作して行くのとを比較したときに、結局後者を選ぶことで、作品を沢山制作することが出来ました。とりわけ、それまで手付かずだった、ドローイングと銅版画作品が生まれてくることにもつながりました。

私にとって、この7年と数ヶ月に残すことができた作品と、このニュースレター、作品販売サイトは、画家の新しい試みとして、今はまだ誰にも評価はされていませんが、私の活動を支えた重要な功績と自負しています。

About Painter Yuko Kawada’s Newsletter

In 2017, upon relocating my studio to Karuizawa, I launched this email newsletter for blog readers and collectors who had purchased my works through galleries.

At that time, my gallery owner of 12 years fell ill, leading to the gallery’s closure. Midst navigating my independence away from the metropolitan center, the newsletter served as a vital support system to sustain my creative practice.

Without missing a single month, I continued delivering this newsletter regularly through 2024. Each issue reflected on my journey, featured installments of my autobiography, and introduced new artworks. To make acquisitions seamless for collectors, I independently built an online sales platform, uploading works, linking them directly from the newsletters, and implementing diverse payment options including credit card processing, installment plans, and invoicing.

Balancing website construction alongside my creative output demanded substantial time and effort. However, comparing maintaining my practice through part-time employment versus learning web development to self-fund my studio work, choosing the latter enabled me to produce a far greater volume of art. Importantly, this approach also sparked the creation of my drawing and intaglio print series—mediums I had previously left unexplored.

To me, the artworks, newsletters, and sales platform created over these seven-plus years represent an invaluable pioneering endeavor as an artist. Though yet to be evaluated by the broader art world, I take pride in these achievements as the essential foundation that sustained my practice.
