Artist Statement-

Artist Statement –
The Trajectory of Spirit and Expression

[Dialogue with Nature and a Record of Contemplation: Current Activities]

I deeply cherish the subtle “realizations” found within the casual moments of everyday life.
These are not extraordinary things; rather, every element equally present in anyone’s environment—the sky, the clouds, the stars in the night sky, the rain, the wind, and the blessings of the sun—serves as the source of my creation.

However, this by no means implies simply replicating their shapes and colors. It is an expression that emerges from the relationship between these elements and myself—filtered through the indescribable “existence of me.”

I hope that such expression is never something alien and exclusive to me, but rather something that connects and resonates with many people on a profound, subconscious level.

The artworks born from my creation do not converge into a single, definitive answer. Along with the continuous changes within myself, the times, and nature, they are born to resonate and “echo” (kodama) as infinite answers.

This process is akin to the quiet prayers and ascetic practices (gyo) of the monks and painter-monks of the past, and it is also a time of deep contemplation. Without catering to fleeting trends or settling for an easy, fixed style, I carefully engrave every piece—from large canvases to small drawings—as a “singular, once-in-a-lifetime record of my state of mind.”

Below is the trajectory of spirit and expression that I have walked through these realizations and dialogues within nature and everyday life.

[Early Years:
Establishing the Individual and Discovering Inner Nature (1990s–)]

My early activities were a quest to acquire my expression as an autonomous individual. To reflect my true, life-sized self on the canvas, I engaged in a dialogue with my materials, which led me to the unique technique of “scratching and hatching.” This became a form of automatic drawing on the surface; the act of carving countless lines became a ritual to unearth my true self—my “inner nature”—and to visualize the time of life.

[Turning Point:
Coexistence with Others and a Social Perspective (2012–)]

Following the Great East Japan Earthquake and my relocation to Nagano Prefecture, I entered a new phase: shifting from solitary creation to “co-creating” (complementing each other’s existence) with supporters and viewers. During this period, I viewed my expressive activities as “social sculpture” (a concept by Joseph Beuys) and experimented with approaches aimed at creating a society where anyone could freely choose art. This social perspective and practice formed my foundation as the independent artist I am today.

[Deepening in Karuizawa:
Dialogue with Overwhelming Nature (2017–)]

After moving my studio to Karuizawa, my days of confronting the “overwhelming providence of nature”—which transcends human concepts—began. A fragment of blue sky seen through an icicle, snowflakes sparkling on a window in the early morning, the glittering of freezing fog. The miraculous geometric structures built by microscopic details, existing simply as an “inevitable form” without any pretense. The time spent surviving the winters and living alongside this harsh yet beautiful nature stripped the artificiality from my work, allowing me to anchor the pure rhythms of nature onto the canvas. (Works from this period, such as “Snow Waves,” were highly acclaimed and exhibited at the Yokosuka Museum of Art’s “Amazing Miniature Paintings” exhibition.)

[Overseas Expansion and Return to the Origin:
Prayers for the “Distant” and the “Interior” (2024–)]

Sharing my coexistence with nature in Karuizawa connected me with GAIA Contemporary, a gallery in Santa Fe, USA, expanding my stage to the overseas market. However, at the end of 2025, I experienced a profound parting with the sudden passing of the gallery owner. Through this deep loss and my experiences in the US, I made a major decision in 2026. While continuing to create large-scale works for ‘public’ spaces like museums, it is both a return to my roots and a systemic upgrade: delivering ‘private interior art’ (small pieces and prints)—which brings quiet harmony to personal, everyday spaces—directly to you from my own e-commerce platform via an on-demand trial delivery system, all while maintaining a collaborative relationship with my US gallery.

[And Now : To the Earth with ART]

Also in 2026, transcending the boundaries of my own creation, I launched “EARTH with ART” (art.earthkikaku.com), a project and platform to introduce and sell works by a diverse range of artists.

Through all these transitions and experiences—engaging with society, confronting nature, navigating profound loss and making crucial decisions—I have now reached a quiet state of mind where I “simply face the canvas as a daily practice.” Without passing through commercial filters, I will continue to deliver the crystals of pure spirit directly from the artist’s studio to you.
